Meeting My Scorpio Side

A few months ago I heard Seane Corn being interviewed. I can’t remember who the interviewer was or even where I heard it, but I remember her talking about not feeling her emotions, but instead intellectualising them (apologies to Seane Corn if my memory has changed this or I am making this up!) This whole conversation stunned me, because I realized then and there that that is exactly what I do.

I am a writer. A word lover. I can tell you for hours how I am feeling – but that doesn’t mean that I am actually feeling anything. I realise now that the moment I start to feel something, I can hear the blog post or the journal entry in my head begin. I think about how I’m supposed to be feeling and what that emotion means – but I don’t actually get into my body and FEEL it.

And I have come to believe that it is all still there – stuck in stasis in my body – until I am ready and willing to let it out.

Today I followed a link to Celestial Space and discovered that as a Scorpio, emotion is part and parcel of who I am. I want to be me at my best, and apparently to be at my best I need to be feeling and expressing my emotions.

The astrological sign of Scorpio is an water sign, fixed mode of expression. Since Scorpio is a water element, experiencing ‘in-depth emotional awareness and expression’ can help one reconnect with the exquisite new feelings and emotions. This is a great time to pamper the emotional level, by engaging in activities which puts one in touch with healing, therapeutic counseling, energy balancing sessions and so forth. – Dipali Desai

I don’t know what my next steps are, but I know that I need to let go, loosen up the stuck bits and start digging.

Eating for Comfort

I watched myself do it.  That in itself was a revelation.

I had just spent 8 days either being frantic with worry, supporting my husband and his Mom as they processed their grief, holding down the supporting role, doing some work from home or trying to suppress my need to organise and plan.  By the 9th day, when they were with the funeral director, and I was on my own for an hour, I had hit overwhelm.

And that is when I watched myself do it.

The tension had built in me until I could hardly breathe, and I felt compelled to go into the nearest shop.  Making a beeline to the fridge, I found one of my favourite little gluten free cakes.  Mostly made of ground almonds and cinnamon, and dusted with icing sugar, it is usually a treat and a complete delight to eat.  Delight, however, was not what I was looking for.

Barely waiting to get outside the door, I had the package opened and the cake eaten before I had gone ten steps.

I felt better.  There was the moment of numbness. There was the moment of relief. There was the moment, the briefest moment, where I felt a little release. The tension and pain lifted for a moment and I could actually breathe again.

Normally the next moment would have been filled with regret, self loathing, frustration or disgust.

But something deep inside of me seems to have shifted.  Even while the cake was being eaten, there was a small part of me standing outside myself, understanding what was going on.  I could see my small self needing love and comfort and peace, and looking for it in the only way she knew how at the time.   The extreme situation had called for an extreme reaction, and food was easier and more acceptable than a temper tantrum or tears right there in the street.  I knew all of that, and I was able to see myself with love.

I’m not sure if this calm watcher will last or whether it will move deep enough to help me choose the right kind of nourishment in times of extreme need.  What I do know is that the more I look at the world and the more I see the narrative behind the action, the more convinced I am that the power to change ourselves and our world lies in the stories we tell.

Healing begins when we tell a different story.

Is That REALLY Fear?

The powerful shifts of 2012 began this morning before I had even gotten out of my pyjamas.

My cells feel scrambled and the world looks different than it did 20 minutes ago.

I started the day listening to the last Circe’s Tribe call recording. In the opening meditation, Jamie had us visualise something that included a colour and an emotion associated with it.  The colour that I saw was pink, and when she said emotion, I thought that I felt panic.  I have been feeling that feeling off an on for a few months now and I have been swallowing that feeling down, giving myself heartache in the process.

I almost stopped listening, but then a question came into my head: “Is that actually panic that I am feeling? Is it really fear or could it be another energy? Could it be power? Excitement? Passion? The colour was pink after all?!”

The question stopped me cold.  In that moment I realised that I have the same reaction to all of the great big strong emotions. Afraid of their bigness, I call them all the same thing: fear. Being afraid of them meant that I stopped knowing what they really were.

That realisation brought on the most incredible feeling of expansion.

Then anxiousness.

Then excitement.

Big excitement.

And then I wrote this in my journal:

“Q: What do I focus on next?
I commit to meeting my emotions, naming and allowing them; letting them be as big as they need to be and expanding myself so that I am big enough and brave enough to hold them.”

There’s that feeling again, but I am going to walk over and meet it face-to-face.
